Another six medals for Canada

Day 3 of the Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships 2006 in Bath, England

Montreal, September 28th 2006 - The results for the relay events held during the second day of competition at the Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships 2006 are in. In addition to the five medals obtained in individual events, Canada adds another six medals, bringing the total to 24. Representing the country are 20 of Canada’s elite athletes selected from provinces coast to coast. These lifeguard-athletes are equally divided into two categories – the Canadian National and Development Teams.

The National delegates won 3 Bronze medals. Jeffrey Alexandre Arthurs (AB), William Walters (BC), Marc Prud’homme (ON) and Nelson Giraldo (PQ) obtained one in the 4 x 50m medley relay. Jennifer Ellison (ON), Gail Alexandra Findlay Shirras (BC), Christie Smith (ON) and Terri Share (ON) obtained one in the 4 x 25m manikin relay and a second in the 4x 50m medley relay. The Development delegates also obtained a Gold medal and two Bronze medals. Renata Jaciw-Zurakowsky (ON), Zuzana Benkoa (BC), Melissa Rydahl (ON) and Jennifer Winfield (AB) obtained theirs in the 4 x 50m medley relay. The foursome Alexander August Griffith (ON), Dan Minster (BC), Brent Thomas Mcleod (ON) and Jean-Michel Fortin (PQ) won a Bronze medal in the 4 x 50m medley relay and a second Bronze medal in the 4 x 50m manikin relay.

A total of 250 athletes from different Commonwealth countries including Australia (Rescue 2006 World Champions) are competing for honor and glory between September 24th and the 29th in Bath, England. The next Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships will be held in 2009, in the beautiful city of Edmonton, Alberta.

The Lifesaving Society - The Lifeguarding Experts - is a Canadian, national volunteer organization and registered charity. The Society relies on a dedicated group of volunteers and staff to accomplish its mission of drowning prevention in Canada and around the world. The Society’s programs cover a wide range of areas including research, first aid, boating, competitive lifesaving, lifeguarding, and lifesaving both in Canada and internationally.
