The NLS Waterpark option builds on the fundamental skills, knowledge, and values taught in the NLS Pool award to train lifeguards in safety supervision and rescue in a waterpark environment.

Prerequisites: NLS Pool (need not be current).

Evaluation: Items marked with an asterisk (*) are instructor-evaluated. Where applicable, examiners may evaluate any or all of these items at their discretion.

Important note: Waterparks vary in size and attractions. The NLS Waterpark option provides candidates with a foundation in lifeguarding a waterpark. Further in-service training is required at a lifeguard’s place of employment for him or her to effectively supervise water rides.

Test items:

  1. * Distinguish between, waterparks and other aquatic facilities. Identify the increased potential for danger in a waterpark.
  2. * Demonstrate an understanding of safety considerations and effective lifeguarding of the following types of slides:
    • Moderate.
    • High-speed.
    • Drop-off.
    • Free-fall.
    • “Kiddie”.
  3. * Demonstrate an understanding of safety considerations and effective lifeguarding of river rides, including those on the following types of rivers:
    • Continuous.
    • Stop-and-go.
    • Slow.
    • Activity.
  4. * Demonstrate an understanding of safety considerations for effective lifeguarding of wave pools.
  5. * Walk through a waterpark, evaluate the ongoing activities and identify potential hazards.
  6. * Demonstrate entries and removals appropriate to wave pools, slides, catch basins and other park apparatus.
  7. * Demonstrate an effective search for a missing person in the waterpark.
  8. *  As a member of a team, perform a rescue of a victim with a suspected spinal injury. Simulate a situation where the victim is located in a catch basin, wave pool, or flume, or who has fallen from a height.
  9. As a member of a team, perform a rescue of an injured victim in a water slide flume.
  10. Respond to emergency situations as a single lifeguard or as a member of a lifeguard team.
